Walsall Regeneration Company is to draw up a business case for developing a fibreoptic infrastructure for the West Midlands town.

The company, a partnership between Walsall council, other public sector bodies and private firms, has appointed consultants from Mott MacDonald and Schema to carry out an in-depth study and produce a business case for the scheme.

The aim is to establish a multi-million pound pilot project – the first in the UK – that will boost the local economy by providing a super-fast network infrastructure. Fibreoptics offer speeds of 1GB a second – compared with broadband speeds in megabytes – and also allow information to travel in both directions simultaneously.

WRC director Mohammad Nazir said: “There is a once in a lifetime opportunity to lay the foundations for fibre optics which will utterly transform the way we do business and how we use technology in the home.”
