Smaller businesses turn to cloud

More companies are turning to the cloud - and it's smaller businesses that are setting the pace

When it comes to cloud adoption, small is beautiful. According to a new survey by Spiceworks, smaller businesses are far more aggressive when it comes to opting for new cloud services.

The network management company found that while 14 percent of SMEs were already using cloud, with another 10 percent planning to, the figures changed dramatically when the size of company was examined.

Thirty eight percent of companies with fewer than 20 employees plan to move to cloud, compared to 22 percent of companies with more than 100 employees who are planning to make the move. Companies in the middle were the most reluctant of all, just 17 percent of them were looking to cloud as an option, said the survey, SMB Cloud Computing Adoption: What’s Hot and What’s Not?

As might be expected, technology companies are setting the pace – 34 percent of companies in the tech sector are looking to use cloud services. Most other sectors are reporting a take-up of about 20 percent.

This growing interest in cloud is in line with other recent surveys. A survey last week from Mimecast also revealed a growing interest in cloud services, while a survey from CWjobs earlier this month found plenty of optimism about IT jobs under cloud.

“Small companies with little existing infrastructure and outsourced IT are moving most quickly to the cloud, whereas larger SMBs are taking more measured steps due to considerable investments in onsite technology,” said Jay Hallberg, co-founder and vice president of marketing for Spiceworks. “With seven times as many users as the enterprise market, it's important for cloud service vendors to consider cloud service adoption patterns and to make it simple for SMBs to manage hybrid on-premise and cloud solutions.”
