Oil giant Shell is working on a pilot with Volkswagen and SAP to find new ways for drivers to refuel and pay at petrol pumps without leaving their cars.
Shell already analyses and models UK customer information to offer targeted services, but is working to learn more about customer habits.
The business has been looking at wearable and mobile payment systems for its customers, product and technology CIO Amy Suhl said.
Suhl said: “The internet of things helps create a sensored environment for connecting the vehicle. The road, the vehicle, the gas station - you can have thousands of pieces of information.”
However, Suhl said that Shell did not have the capacity to do this without partnerships with Volkswagen and SAP. “You have to do this with a collected group. No one company can do it alone,” she added.
The pilot, which is underway in Hannover, Germany, is supported by a bespoke cloud-based system.
“We consider the connected car important in the development of our customers’ experience at Shell retail stations and will help us continue to provide outstanding customer service,” said Rene Honig, portfolio and innovation vice president at Shell’s Technical and Competitive IT division.
“The successful cross-industry pilot project demonstrates potential implementations of future mobility concepts and their utility and convenience for our customers,” said Dr. Volkmar Tanneberger, head of electronic development at Volkswagen.
“Customer feedback on this pilot project is important to us as it helps us consider how to increase the use of mobility concepts in the future.”
