Informing Healthcare, the NHS information and technology agency for Wales, has signed a framework agreement with Codegate to supply a patient demographic labelling system to family doctors across the province.

The system will provide barcoded labels for medical test results to ensure the accuracy and legibility of patient information and speed up laboratory service times.

The LabelTrace technology prints key patient demographic information directly from GPs’ clinical systems onto multi-part perforated labels specifically designed for patient test request forms and tubes. This includes the NHS number and barcode.

The system will replace handwritten request forms and will be phased in over the next six months. Its introduction follows a trial at 10 surgeries in the Rhondda Cynon Taff area, and at eight other GP practices using the Barry blood service.

Informing Healthcare chair Ian Kelsall said: "This is a simple idea that works well and delivers major benefit to staff and patients."
