NHS organisations in Camden and Islington have deployed an IP virtual private network from Ntl:Telewest Business to connect 14 sites in north London.

The VPN contract was signed by Camden and Islington ICT Shared Services, which supports Camden primary care trust (PCT), Islington PCT and Camden and Islington mental health and social care trust. The network has been set up with high security levels to protect NHS information and patients’ data.

The deal will give ,ore than 2,000 staff – including nurses, therapists and consultants – from all three organisations access to all national and local NHS applications from 14 remote small office and home office sites, improving flexible working opportunities.

Steve Guise, senior technical project manager for the shared services organisation, said the VPN would “significantly improve the speed of access and levels of connectivity for staff who would normally only have a dial-up connection to the trust’s resources”.

The VPN contract extends the shared services body’s existing three-year relationship with Ntl:Telewest.
