Nestlé has chosen a business intelligence tool from Cognos to enable staff to get more out of the food and drink giant’s established SAP Business Warehouse reporting software when analysing sales data and other business performance metrics.
It said it selected Cognos 8 Business Intelligence because of its tight integration with SAP Business Warehouse and the enhanced reporting capability it would give to staff.
The Swiss firm is already using SAP Business Warehouse as its global standard for data warehousing and analytical reporting. It will use the Cognos BI tool to complement the SAP Business Warehouse front end, giving “power users” the ability to handle ad hoc reporting and grouping of data.
The tool will also enable users to merge external data from any source with data from SAP Business Warehouse. It can also push pre-formatted reports to end users and adapt reports in line with different user needs.
Nestlé has been using SAP for its core enterprise resource planning plus a range of other SAP customer relationship management and supply chain modules since 2002, which it embarked on a group-wide programme to standardise its IT infrastructure and reduce complexity worldwide.
It signed a five-year deal with IBM that year to centralise all its global data and standardise its IT operations around the world into just five main datacentres – two in Switzerland, plus facilities in Sydney, Frankfurt and Phoenix. Before that, Nestlé took a regionalised approach to IT, with each country running separate systems.
Earlier this month the group reported organic sales growth of 7.4% in the first half of the year, lifting consolidated sales to £21.4bn.
