Nationwide has launched a mobile app to provide customers with retail discounts based on their previous spending habits.

The Simply Rewards app, available on Android and iOS devices, analyses past purchases to display tailored offers to individuals, as well as allowing customers to search for discounts from a range of high street brands based on location and category, such as food entertainment or travel.

Customers can also make restaurant reservations directly from the app.

“Our research shows that vouchers and offers now play an important role in people’s spending behaviour, so we have introduced an innovative new way to help our customers find those deals and make their money go further," said Chris Rhodes, Nationwide executive director, Group Retail. 

“The Simply Rewards app is the latest example of how Nationwide rewards its existing customers. Not only does the app give our customers a wide range of discounts, from everyday favourites to exclusive offers, it also highlights the best offers based on how they are already spending their money.”

Retail banks in the UK have begun to expand the functionality of mobile apps in recent months, adding features such as the ability to cancel lost cards and order replacements through a smartphone.

However, a recent Forrester report claimed that most lenders have been slow to include more advanced functionality such as location-aware offers and digital money management services similar to those offered by the start-ups such as Money Dashboard and OnTrees.
