The Ministry of Defence has signed a multimillion pound contract with software firm Autonomy for a data server to support its single information infrastructure.

The MoD will use Autonomy’s Intelligent Data Operating Layer Server (IDOL) to improve access to its huge amounts of unstructured data. The software will allow the MoD to bring together and process information in text, audio or video format.

The MoD aims to be able to use its data more effectively to support joint operations by the armed forces and to speed up access to important information. The software includes analytics capabilities enabling users to make conceptual and contextual associations between disparate pieces of data drawn from different applications.

The IDOL system will also enable the MoD to automate critical processes and tasks that have traditionally been performed manually and will be rolled out to more than 400,000 users.
