Metro Bank has unveiled its first mobile banking app, which allows users to block and unblock a lost debit card from their mobile device.
The app also gives customers the more traditional functionality, such as viewing account information and transferring money. As well as blocking a card, customers can also order a replacement from their smartphones or tablets.
According to research carried out by Opinium Research on behalf of the bank, 42 percent of UK bank customers have had their cards lost or stolen - with more than half of them (55 percent) finding them again.
Other features include the ability to locate the nearest Metro Bank branch, across its network of 27 stores in the south east of England.
The app is now available for free on iOS, Android and Windows Phone.
The bank had announced that the launch of the mobile app was imminent in November, as part of an overhaul of customer facing systems which included enhancements to its online banking platform.
The bank, launched in 2010 as a new market entrant, uses Trusteer’s Rapport browser plug-in to secure customer access to its online banking portal, offering protection against Trojan malware variants such as Zeus/SpyEye.
A recent survey of mobile apps in the UK by analysts Forrester found that functionality has improved across all major banks, with Barclays awarded the top spot.
