Intel this week released a software package intended to encourage development of Fibre Channel over Ethernet products for the Linux operating system.

FCoE is a proposed specification that allows Fibre Channel storage-area-network (SAN) traffic to run over Ethernet. Consolidating LAN and SAN traffic onto a single fabric is said to simplify network infrastructure in the datacentre.

Intel's FCoE software package is available now for download here. As part of the package, Linux developers can test and modify the FCoE software stack.

Cisco submitted the initial FCoE proposal to the T11 Fibre Channel standards body in April. The new FCoE initiator code is based on a specification being developed by T11 in the FC-BB-5 work group.

The FCoE specification is expected to be complete in 2008.
