IBM has helped deliver Nationwide's latest banking system, in an ongoing partnership to transform the building society's IT infrastructure.

Nationwide partnered with IBM to implement the FlexPlus current account platform, rolling out SAP’s core banking software with the help of banking solutions delivery specialist Axxiome.  

IBM was tasked with project managing the delivery of FlexPlus, following the introduction of a banking platform to support another account system, FlexDirect, last year. The latest project involved assisting on the design and testing of the the FlexPlus system which will integrate with the company’s internet banking and mobile apps.

Nationwide also worked with IBM’s research arm in Husley in the UK and La Gaude in France, developing business and technical proofs of concept, as well as providing performance testing ahead of the launch of FlexPlus.

Tony Prestedge, Chief Operating Officer at Nationwide, commented that the launch of the banking platform is part of ongoing efforts to transform its IT systems.

“Meeting the needs of our customers is at the heart of everything we do and our investment in technology gives us the tools we need to do that.  Our focus has been on providing our customers with new and better ways to do business with us and a greater choice in transaction methods that meet their needs, as well as improving the choice of products and services,” he said. 

“The new banking platform delivered with our technology partner IBM and technology providers SAP and Axxiome, went live last year and is at the heart of our new FlexDirect and FlexPlus current accountsThe platform enables Nationwide to create more flexible products, providing our members with more choice and helping ensure we bring competition to the current account market."

He added: "This is just the start of a series of planned developments to make us a more agile, innovative and responsive financial services provider.” 

Nationwide has partnered on a number of projects to overhaul existing systems.  In 2011 the building society completed a three year project to upgrade its banking service, with IBM providing programme governance under an IT services contract.

The following year Nationwide also partnered with Computacenter to design and deploy a new data centre, implementing IBM servers and VMware vSphere virtualisation as it aimed to further improve online services.
