Google UK fixes ‘algorithmic bug’ which put defaced Greggs the Baker logo at top of search engine results, the software giant said today.

UK based Greggs the Baker fell foul to a bug in the Google SEO algorithm and suffered a social media storm after an altered image of the pastry shop logo began trending appeared at the top of the search engine’s results.

Instead of the official slogan, “Always fresh. Always tasty”, the logo read “Providing shit to scum for over 70 years.”

Greggs quickly took to Twitter to ask Google’s UK team for help, offering a tray of doughnuts in exchange.

A spokesperson for Google said: “Google worked hard to fix an algorithmic bug as soon as it was flagged. Most importantly, Google still haven’t got their donuts [sic] as promised by Greggs – they would definitely be appreciated. From their Twitter feed, Greggs seem pleased this is resolved.”

Google began penalising 'overly optimised' websites for SEO in 2012 when it changed its algorithms.

This week Social media giant Twitter announced that it will remove images and videos of deceased people on families' requests, writing these new changes into its policy.

Google UK’s managing director Dan Cobley announced he is quitting to head up his own financial technology (fintech) incubator and investment fund, Computerworlduk reported earlier this month.

Greggs the Bakers uses automated purchase-to-pay systems developed by UNIT4 Business Software and Intelligent Capture. The Invoice4 system allows all invoices to be sent electronically into Greggs’ existing UNIT4 Coda Financials system, ComputerworldUK reported.
