General Motors has signed a deal with AT&T to put 4G telematics mobile connectivity into millions of its cars across North America.
The applications delivered across AT&T's network will include vehicle safety, security, diagnostic and infotainment services - including streaming audio, web access and video to backseat passengers.
The deal covers most Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles, said GM, beginning in 2014 in the US and Canada.
The multi-year agreement enable's GM’s in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspots and voice calling services. The value of the deal has not been disclosed. AT&T claims its 4G network will be accessible to 300 million people in North America by the end of 2014.
“By adding a fast, reliable and built-in 4G LTE connection specifically designed for vehicles we can drive innovation to enhance virtually every aspect of the driving and riding experience - from safety and diagnostics to entertainment to integration of emerging third-party applications,” said Mary Chan, president of global connected consumer business at General Motors.
GM is previewing a series of "conceptual connected services" at this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. GM’s move to integrate 4G LTE services in vehicles in the US and Canada is "part of a broader global strategy", the car manufacturer said.
Last year it was announced that Ford and Toyota were teaming up to improve hi-tech cars by setting standards for telematics.
