EE, the UK’s only LTE network in operation, has doubled its 4G customers to nearly 700,000.
The number of people on EE’s superfast mobile network is 687,000, EE revealed today in its second quarter financial results. That’s twice as many as it had at the end of March, when the mobile network had only 318,000 customers using its LTE service.
However, EE has a total of 27 million customers, which means that only 2.5 per cent of them are using 4G.
EE, previously known as Everything Everywhere, said it was on track to reach its target figure of one million 4G customers by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, EE also announced today that it has rolled out its 4G service to 10 additional towns and cities across the UK, bringing the total up to 95. The company said this means that 60 per cent of the UK now has access to its 4G network.
Those that went live today included: Altrincham, Bedford, Camberley, Crawley, Farnborough, Farnham, Maidstone, Rochdale, Tonbridge and Welwyn Garden City.
Fifteen of the 95 towns and cities served by 4G are now receiving what EE refers to as ‘double speed’ 4G, which can deliver speeds of 60Mbps, but averages out at 24-30Mbps.
The latest figure was increased after EE added Belfast, Newcastle and Southampton to the list of towns and cities that receive the quicker network speeds.
However, the expansion forced the company’s capital expenditure for the first half of the year to rise 20 per cent to £295m. Despite this, EE managed to post a turnover of £3.211bn for the first six months to the end of June, up 3.1 per cent on the same time last year.
Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE, said: "Today's results demonstrate our success in building our new brand and differentiating our network to drive commercial momentum while continuing to deliver cost savings to increase our margin performance."
EE is currently the only 4G offering in the UK but it will soon have to compete with other mobile network providers that are planning to launch their own 4G networks in the coming months.
