The De Beers Group has signed a six-year £22 million global networking and IT services contract with BT to more efficiently link up its diamond mining and administration sites.
The contract covers 70 sites across the world, including exploration, mining and administration. Established in 1888, De Beers employs 20,000 staff and contractors globally.
De Beers is using BT Connect networking technologies including fibre, microwave and satellite. These will give De Beers staff, whether they are located in the frozen Northwest Territories of Canada, the Bushveld regions of southern Africa or the cities of Europe, access to business applications and data storage, as well as voice and conferencing services.
BT Connect Accelerate technology will allow De Beers to prioritise its critical business applications accessed across its global network, to ensure a better and more productive user experience for all employees, promises BT.
The BT One high-definition video conferencing service will support remote sites where travel to is expensive and time consuming. De Beers will be able to extend the reach of its experts, allowing them to work effectively with the global workforce.
Craig Charlton, CIO of the De Beers Group of Companies, said: “Whether it’s connecting our mining assets or our global distribution network, we need a partner with a strong track record. Using BT’s network will better connect our global operations.”
In 2009, De Beers sued Atos Origin over a failed IT services contract. In 2011, when Anglo American acquired De Beers, it was said optimising procurement, asset management, knowledge systems and shared services would be a priority for the combined companies, which were both established SAP users.
