Civica has announced the acquisition of Gateway Computing, which provides electronic document management (EDM) systems to the healthcare sector.
Gateway, based in Yeovil, also provides associated business process services, including outsourced document scanning.
The company counts more than 50 NHS organisations, including some of the UK’s largest NHS trusts, among its customers that use its outsourced scanning services, which are used to digitise more than 140 million images annually.
With the addition of Gateway to the group, Civica will supply EDM services to more than 275 NHS trusts.
Analyst firm TechMarketView does not believe that the acquisition is particularly large.
“The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but we know that Gateway was too small to need to file full accounts with Companies House last year, so it’s clearly not a large purchase by Civica’s standards,” said analyst Tola Sargeant.
However, she added: “This purchase is very much in keeping with its strategy: Gateway brings a complementary technology – Civica already has a strong presence in local government EDM – and a footprint in the NHS market.
“EDM and outsourced document scanning are in demand in the health sector, which remains heavily paper-based despite the erstwhile National Programme [for IT, or NPfIT], and Civica’s scale and complementary systems and services should make it easier for Gateway to win business.
“All in all, another sensible bolt-in by CEO Simon Downing and the team.”
