CGI wins service integration contract with DECC

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has signed a deal with CGI to provide desktop managed services and service desk support to its 1,800 employees.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has signed a deal with CGI to provide desktop managed services and service desk support to its 1,800 employees.

CGI aims to provide the department with systems that enable DECC employees to work wherever they are.

DECC will also have access to CGI’s ‘Secure Government Cloud’ - a private infrastructure-as-a-service platform – which hopes to allow the department to meet its immediate scalability requirements.

Service desk support will be provided through CGI’s South Wales shared service centre, which will offer DECC hardware break-fix services delivered in partnership with an SME, CC Engineering.

“We want to enable real change in how DECC delivers on the energy agenda and that requires our team to have effective technology to support them. We also want our IT to be at forefront of the green IT agenda” said Jeremy Boss at DECC.

Logica was acquired by Canada-based CGI last year for an estimated £1.7 billion and appointed Tim Gregory to head up the company’s UK operations. Since then Gregory has spoken out about the government’s latest procurement reforms, warning that if the pendulum swings too far in favour of SMEs, then big suppliers will take their investment elsewhere.

In other news, DECC named the suppliers that will form the newly established Data and Communications Company (DCC), which will play a major role in the rollout of smart meters across the UK.

DCC will be responsible for linking 53 million smart electricity and gas meters in homes and businesses with the business systems of energy suppliers, network operators and energy service companies.
