BT is switching millions of its customers’ email accounts to a new outsourced BT Mail service, and will be hoping to avoid the debacle faced by Sky customers when an email migration there went wrong earlier this year.
Sky customers were furious after the company’s migration away from Gmail to Yahoo! for its email platform left users without access to their email and/or facing severe delays.
A new BT.com will combine breaking news and simple access to email with customers’ BT account and billing information, from next month. All of the services and content will be available via a single log-in.
During the summer the BT Yahoo! portal will close, but customers will be able to access their BT Yahoo! Mail account by clicking on a link from BT.com.
Later in the year customers will be moved to BT Mail. Their inbox, including all of their folders, will be moved over and customers will keep the same email address, although they may be prompted to change their password.
BT Mail will also feature in-built anti-virus and anti-spam systems. BT will provide the service using provider Critical Path, which provides "white label" services to a variety of companies wanting to keep their branding on them.
Nick Wong, director of online for BT’s consumer division, said: “The new BT.com has been developed to make things easier and more engaging for our customers. They will only have to log in to this single site for all their requirements."
The new site will feature "breaking and exclusive news and features", said BT, generated by a dedicated team of journalists at the Press Association, covering areas such as news, entertainment and lifestyle. With BTSport.com also launching in the summer, the site is promising customers "exclusive live sports action" as well.
