BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC, has chosen the Apigee Edge application programming interface (API) platform as a traffic manager on BBC Store.
BBC Store is a new direct-to-consumer retail platform, which will allow consumers to buy and keep BBC programmes. BBC Worldwide will launch BBC Store in 2015.
BBC Worldwide has a complex multi-tier IT architecture, using a number of suppliers to provide a variety of platforms developed for video on demand delivery. Apigee Edge will act as the internal API management platform, mediating and brokering traffic from application to application and improving interoperability between front-end and back-end systems.
Apigee has already completed the project blueprint, outlining current best practices at the BBC on how to develop, expose and consume APIs across the business.
Michael Fleshman, SVP for consumer digital technology at BBC Worldwide, said, “BBC Store will allow fans of programmes such as Doctor Who, Sherlock and Top Gear to buy and keep digital copies of their favourite shows. Consumers will also be able to explore and buy from the BBC's extensive archive.”
Apigee customers in Europe include Marks & Spencer, Inmarsat, ITV, Orange, Philips Lighting and Swisscom.
