Barclays has apologised for an IT glitch that led to customers not being able to make payments through online banking and in retail stores.
Customers also experienced delays in receiving payments - including payday wages - in their accounts.
“We would like to reassure customers that the technical issue is fixed with all services working normally,” the bank said. “We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Barclays identified the technical issue, which affected services for more than two hours, last night (31 October 2013). It declined to provide further details on the source of the problem.
Although it said it immediately set to fix the problem, the technical difficulties led to a delay in crediting payments to a number of customers’ accounts.
The bank sought to rectify the problem this morning (1 November 2013), and all credits were applied by 10.30am.
“We would like to reassure customers that should they incur any fees or charges as a result of this incident, they will be refunded,” the bank said.
Barclays recently reported a 20 percent fall in pre-tax profits, driven in part by investment in new technology and processes to cut its future operating costs.
