Online-only groceries retailer Ocado has launched a recruitment drive to find 100 software engineers and other technology specialists.
The company, which delivers Waitrose produce and will soon be delivering Morrison's groceries, is creating 100 jobs at its Hatfield, Hertfordshire office, and a further 50 will be based in Krakow, Poland.
The retailer highlighted the fast pace of its technology team as a draw.
“In addition to the work-life benefits of working for Ocado, our employees tell us that being able to make a real difference is what gets them excited,” said Paul Clarke, director of technology at Ocado.
“For example, they can pitch an idea in the morning, start working on the code in the afternoon and before they know it, that code’s been approved and uploaded. This business and technical agility is critical to our success.”
Ocado has used its agility to try and attract experts from technology divisions of major London firms as part of a ‘guerrilla’ recruitment campaign. Using a high-powered water jet and a series of stencils, it sprayed job adverts onto the doorsteps of the offices of UBS, Skype and Amazon, with messages such as ‘Fed up of being a drone? Try programming one instead’ and ‘Allowed to pitch ideas to your CEO? Then implement code in 2 hours? Thought not.’
Ocado is looking to hire software engineers, developers, designers and technicians who “share the pioneering spirit to build next generation software systems”. Current vacancies include roles of senior Java software engineer and user experience designer.
The new recruits will join a range of teams, including analytics and optimisation, business support systems and customer fulfilment centre (CFC) simulation teams.
