The NHS is running three projects trialling the electronic sharing of newborn screening results as part of the government’s digital by default agenda.
It is hoped that the trials will improve data quality by reducing the need to repeatedly input data and manually transfer data between different healthcare providers, such as midwives, GPs and health visitors. The newborn screening projects come under the £1.3 million Safer Hospitals Safer Wards Technology Fund.
“The NHS screening programmes are very pleased to be participating in these innovative projects that will ultimately improve the clinical experience for their child, their family and the midwives, doctors and nurses involved, while providing a safer and more robust method for sharing important patient information,” said Anne Mackie, director of programmes for the UK National Screening Committee.
In one trial, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust worked with Northgate Information Solutions and CSE Healthcare to build an electronic record system called KITS RiO that integrates all its children’s services patient records. Prior to this system, the information was not shared electronically.
In a second trial, Central Surrey Health is working with Northgate and CSE Healthcare to implement the electronic transfer of newborn hearing screening test results held in the national eSP IT system directly into its child health record department’s CSE Healthcare’s RiO system.
Thirdly, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is trialling sharing bloodspot test screening results in its child health information systems with other healthcare providers, such as GPs. This is also in partnership with Northgate.
The government has made a commitment to create a paperless NHS by 2018, in a bid to save £4.4 billion a year.
