Former SAP CIO Oliver Bussmann joins UBS

UBS Group has appointed Oliver Bussmann as Chief Information Officer (CIO), moving on from his role as CIO of SAP.

Bussmann will replace Michele Trogni, who will retire after 25 years at the Swiss financial services group, with the Bussmann taking over on 1st June 2013.

Bussmann spent three years as CIO at SAP, following nine years in various technology related roles at Allianz Group. Prior to this he has also been employed at Deutsche Bank and IBM.

Commenting on the appointment, Ulrich Koerner, Group COO said: "Oliver's proven track record with large-scale technology transformations combined with his experience of financial services, software and managing large global teams all position him well to lead our Group Technology organisation forward."

According to Rob Grimsey, group marketing director at Harvey Nash director, although it is less common for CIOs to make the move from IT vendors into end user organisations, due to Bussmann’s background in financial services the switch makes good sense.

“On first inspection the idea of somebody moving from an IT services company into an end user company is quite uncommon, especially if you are head of an IT function.  You don’t really see a lot of that,” Grimsey said.

However, he points out that in Bussmann’s case his background in end-user computing in the financial services sector makes a clear case for moving from the German software supplier.

“If you look at the IT estate that he is managing - at SAP it was thousands of people as part of a massively global company that has come to terms with mobility, outsourcing, and so forth - he has been across all of those elements,” Grimsey said.

“When you describe his role in its pure sense, there is a strong connection with what the UBS setup is.  It is not an obvious appointment, but those things explain it more than you might think.”
