In a week that saw new business technology leaders at supermarket Sainsbury’s and advertising agency WPP, insurance group Aviva announced Monique Shivanandan as CIO.

Shivanandan will join the global insurance firm in April and report to chief executive Mark Wilson. Earlier this year COO Cathryn Riley stepped down as COO of Aviva.

Last year HMRC CIO duo Phil Pavitt and Mark Hall joined Aviva. Pavitt is Global Operations and Transformation Director, while Hall is Director of Service Management.

Shivanandan returns to the UK from a recent US role as senior VP and chief technology officer (CTO) at credit card services company Capital One. Previously she was CIO for BT Retail.

In a statement chief executive Wilson said Shivanandan brought “digital capabilities” to the insurance firm.

"[Shivanandan] has a strong background leading and transforming digital capabilities at major companies. Monique will play an important role in Aviva's turnaround, ensuring we use new technology to serve our customers and partners simply and effectively," he said.
