The City & Guilds chartered institute has deployed a cloud-based managed communications system from network integrator Azzurri Communications.

City & Guilds, which offers qualifications for over 20 trades, is using the ICON Communicate system from Azzurri to get access to IP telephony, unified communications and a contact centre hosted in the cloud.

Ian Turfrey, CIO at the City & Guilds Group, said: “My strategic goal is to remove all of our communications systems and servers from our physical sites by the end of 2014.

"ICON Communicate has enabled me to take a major step forward in delivering on my vision of an unburdened IT team where all IT and telecoms are delivered as a service from external suppliers."

He said: "The IT department should no longer be the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the organisation. Instead it should be the service provider that uses technology to unburden the business to do bigger and better things.

"By outsourcing all of our telecoms to a single, cloud-based managed service which can be scaled to our needs, ICON Communicate delivers that and lets us focus on the bigger picture.”

In 2012, City & Guilds consolidated all its telecoms services with Azzurri Communications in a bid to cut costs and enable staff to bring their own devices to work.

Under the £900,000 three-year contract, Azzurri took over from four existing telecoms suppliers at the organisation, to provide IP telephony, audio and videoconferencing, calls and fixed lines and support, as a managed service.
