O2 is moving from the traditional mobile phone communication space to the Internet of Things, the network operator’s head of customer strategy has said.
Like other network operators, O2 is looking for new revenue streams as relying on income from traditional streams like phone calls, texts and mobile internet, becomes increasingly challenging.
Jonathan Earle, head of customer strategy and development at 02, said: “Nest, Hive, these are going to become mainstream products and services, so at what stage does 02 move into things like protecting your home, protecting your car?
Speaking at Marketing Week live, he added: “My challenge, in the strategy area, is to take us on that journey from mobile phones’ minutes, texts and data into connected devices and services and ultimately to have different conversations with our customers to build up customer profiles.”
Telefonica, which owns 02, is currently offering connected services to car manufacturers and is keen to make its mark on the IoT space.
It signed a machine to machine (M2M) contract to provide OnStar, a division of car manufacturer General Motors, with data transmission technology to provide services like emergency services, collision detection, roadside assistance, navigation and remote tracking and maintenance.
It also announced a partnership with manufacturer Tesla, to connect all its Tesla Model S cars distributed in Europe.
Vodafone, Sprint, Deutsche Telekom, Verizon and Orange have similar M2M programs.
