Customers of Yorkshire Bank and Clydesdale Bank, owned by National Australia Bank, have suffered yet more problems with using their debit cards to make payments and withdraw cash from ATMs today.

This time, a ‘hardware issue’ with contractor First Data was cited as the cause.

A spokesperson for the banks said: “Some customer card transactions have been affected by an intermittent service issue today. This has been caused by a hardware issue at our supplier First Data, which is currently being investigated.

"Service is operating normally and we apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The problems started this morning, with the banks initially saying that the issues were resolved by 10am. However, customers started reporting problems again at around lunchtime.

In early March, some of the banks’ customers had difficulty using their debit cards after the banks transferred systems operations to external contractor First Data. The problem lasted for about three days at the time, but customers have reported issues with their cards on several occasions since.

The banks said that not all the problems were related to First Data.

First Data said in a statement: "On 25 April 2012 First Data experienced an outage in a system that affected the processing of debit card transactions on behalf of some of its UK clients.

 "Ensuring the highest level of customer service, as well as data and payment processing integrity, are top priorities for First Data. With this in mind, First Data is working closely with all parties to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

 "First Data would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to cardholders. If cardholders have any questions they should in the first instance contact their issuing bank."
