WaveMaker has announced the release of its WaveMaker Visual Ajax Studio version 3.1.1, a tool for building database-driven Ajax Web applications without having to write complex code. Of particular note is the following:
the WaveMaker Visual Ajax Studio 3.1.1 and the WaveMaker Rapid Deployment Framework 3.1.1 are now available under the open source GNU AGPL version 3 license as well as a WaveMaker commercial license. With the addition of the AGPL license, WaveMaker continues its commitment to open source and open standards, eliminating vendor lock while enabling developers and enterprises to choose the license that best meets their needs.
It's interesting to see the new GNU AGPL – the Affero General Public Licence – being adopted here. As the FSF explains:
The GNU Affero General Public License is a free, copyleft license for software and other kinds of works, specifically designed to ensure cooperation with the community in the case of network server software.
This issue of how such Web services based on open source software should be licensed is likely to become an increasingly hot one in the future, and it's good to see WaveMaker offering early backing to the AGPL with this move.
