The British voice artist behind the Siri app on the iPhone 4S has stuck his head above the parapet -- against Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) wishes. In the UK and Ireland, Siri is voiced by a set of Nuance synthesis parameters, called "Daniel".
- On the one hand, I bet Apple's unhappy that it's not controlling the PR message here.
- On The Other Hand, it's not as if the company paid him anything for the Siri voiceover work.
Plus, today's skateboarding duck: Symphony of Science - Onward to the Edge!..
Matt Warman reports:
Daniel’s real name is Jon Briggs...a former technology journalist who “fell into” voice-over work. [He] recorded “Daniel” for Scansoft, which...merged with Nuance, the company that works with Apple on Siri.
[Apple] asked Briggs not to talk about Siri...but, since Briggs pointed out that he had never had a contract with them, the company has not been back in touch. ... The voice...has been used by people as diverse as the British Computer Association for the Blind and London’s King’s Cross station. ... Subsequently, he has been the voice of Radio 2...The Weakest Link, and...satnav for Garmin, TomTom, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi and Porsche.
Nick Clayton adds:
[T]he first he knew of Apple’s use of his voice was when he saw a demonstration of Siri on television.
And he will never need to have his voice recorded again, no matter how many products it is heard on. “Daniel” the character created...from fragments of his voice, can live forever.
Jon Briggs tweets:
I hasten to add I love Apple and have championed Apple Kit since the early 80's. I even own a Mac SE!
I'm just delighted to be part of the fabric of technology! It's also nice to say that I didn't get a penny from Apple
I didn't go looking for publicity - it came and found me!
Meanwhile, Paul Daniels (the voiceover artist, not the magician) childishly takes the P:
[S]omeone had to do it to @jon_briggs - click to listen
