Open Source Social Networks Are Like Buses....

Share wait for ages, and then three come along at once. Last week I wrote about Insoshi, and wondered whether it was the open source white box social networking company I was looking for. As you can see from the comments on that post, it seems there are several other contenders for that title:, Crabgrass and OpenPlans.

I must confess I've never come across them before, which is doubtless due to my parochial background, but it also points to a larger problem: these aren't well-known projects, and so stand little chance of becoming the equivalent of Ning, let along Facebook.

What I'm really looking for is something that will really scale. I'm not sure what the added ingredient is that makes that happen, but I'm not convinced that any of the above have it yet. Any thoughts on what's needed?
