Arms manufacturer Lockheed Martin is putting data analytics software Splunk to work monitoring the IT systems and network that support its F-35 Lightning II fighter jet.
The jet, which is in final stages of development, uses an Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS) as its IT backbone, monitoring the fleets in the US and in international military branches like the UK, which along with several other countries, is working with Lockheed Martin to develop the state-of-the-art jet fighter.
The F-35 Lightning II boasts “the most powerful and comprehensive integrated sensor package of any fighter aircraft in history”.
It offers pilots real-time access to battle space information by collecting data from its sensors, which can be automatically shared with commanders at sea, in the air or on the ground.
Using Splunk, the firm can detect anomalies and ensure applications are running bug-free across this system.
The contract with Splunk Enterprise, which was announced this week, will allow Lockheed Martin to analyse and predict operational maintenance, provide greater visibility into system performance and ensure that customers have unparalleled access to the ALIS network by spotting issues before they occur. It is already using Splunk in 25 different operating environments for IT and application development monitoring as well as machine data analysis.
While primarily focused on security use, Lockheed Martin is also using the software to review data from environmentally sensitive machines to alert technicians of possible temperature and humidity threats that could affect the jets.
