A technical error at Lloyds TSB Cardnet caused more than 200,000 debit and credit cardholders to be double-charged for transactions made on New Year’s Eve.

The glitch hit many customers who paid for transactions at retailers who use Lloyds’ wireless Eftpos terminals. Customers of numerous different banks may have been affected.

“A technical error with our merchant system on 31 December resulted in the duplication of certain payments from cardholders to some merchants,” the bank said in a statement.

“Duplicated transactions have been reversed and cardholders are being reimbursed.”

The bank has set up a helpline, 01268 567 100, to provide affected cardholders with more information. It advised those who have received a financial penalty from their bank as a result of the over-charge to get in touch.

“We will consider all reasonable and evidenced requests for reimbursement,” Lloyds TSB said.
