Transport for London’s Traffic Directorate (TD) has revealed plans to improve the flow of traffic on the capital’s roads through the use of ‘co-operative networks’ and social media.
TD is responsible for managing the London Streets Traffic Control Centre, maintenance of London’s traffic operations infrastructure, providing a traffic modelling centre of excellence, technology development and supporting development of Network Management Plans.
It has this week outlined plans to hold a supplier engagement day to find out how London can take advantage of co-operative networks and the flow of real-time data to improve traffic control, which TD believes may also hold a “commercial opportunity” for technology companies, car manufacturers and service providers.
TD said co-operative networks could provide granular data in real time, without the need for costly infrastructure, to help ease the flow of growing congestion on London’s roads. It hopes to exploit this data through “proactive traffic management measures across the traffic corridors”.
Transport for London (TfL) also hopes to provide a “two way link” between the customer on the street and the traffic management via social media sites, with the aim of “making the customer part of the journey”.
It hopes to inform travellers in real time about disruptions to the traffic network and provide suitable alternatives. TD also believes that it can reduce London’s carbon footprint, by encouraging smoother driving practices, whilst also reducing braking and congestion.
The planned supplier engagement day will be used to discuss the plans and develop a “multi-user proof of concept”. However, it also said that there will be a limited amount of money available to fund the proof of concepts.
In other news, it was recently revealed that TL has plans to ditch cash payments on London buses due to contactless cards gaining greater acceptance across the capital’s transport network.
