The Learning and Skills Council is to fund the capital costs of upgrading JANET connections for all Further Education colleges in England, it has been confirmed.
Colleges will also contribute to the ongoing recurrent costs following the upgrade programme to the educational computer network, which will result in bandwidths up to 100Mbit/s and faster and more efficient connections.
All FE colleges have been contacted with the offer, and to date 34 having requested quotes for increased bandwidth.
Stephen Nichols, contract manager in the technology for learning department of the skills council, said the increase in JANET bandwidth would “really help colleges progress their use of technology in learning and is part of the LSC's policy of encouraging colleges to e-maturity.”
JANET will implement the programme at all colleges that request an upgrade, with the work to be carried out region by region throughout 2008.
