Buckinghamshire County Council has awarded a four-year framework contract to support the Public Services Network it is building.
Bucks has brought in Updata Infrastructure to move WAN, LAN, security and school services to the soon-to-be-created Buckinghamshire Public Services Network (BPSN).
BPSN will allow public sector bodies across the county to connect and collaborate. It will also deliver more efficient operations and reduce costs, said Bucks, through the delivery of IT services on a county-wide shared service basis covering voice calls, schools services, data centres and internet security.
Bucks announced its PSN plans last year and is working with district councils in Aylesbury Vale, Chiltern, South Bucks and Wycombe, along with Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, to share services.
The network will also be available to neighbouring authorities as well as to voluntary and community bodies and health partners. The framework with Updata includes maintaining the current wide area network, the local area network and associated ICT services. At the same time Updata will commence the build and roll-out of the Bucks PSN and begin transitioning sites and services.
Councillor Peter Cartwright, Buckinghamshire County Council’s cabinet member for finance and resources, said, “Updata’s proposal fits well into our whole council transformational journey, allowing the county council and partners to deliver services efficiently, whilst making budget savings and improving the customer experience.”
Caroline Cooper, CIO at Buckinghamshire County Council, said: "BPSN is future-proofing our infrastructure and ensuring that every public sector stakeholder can benefit from a high-speed, secure and resilient network infrastructure.
"We want to be in a position to take advantage of the services that will be made available via the PSN, such as the G-Cloud Application Store."
The estimated value of the Updata framework contract has not been disclosed. Earlier this year Buckinghamshire County Council replaced its ITSM (IT service management) system in a bid to improve enquiry management and cut costs. The council implemented the Supportworks IT Systems Management software from Hornbill.
