Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTHFT) is saving £27,000 a year by reducing its printing costs.
The Trust has just completed the first stage of Canon’s managed print services solution, during which time it has managed to reduce print volume by 15 percent and reduce the amount of colour printing to less than 10 percent.
The project also has an environmental rationale. By setting default paper and toner saving settings, the Trust is saving 4.3 million sheets of paper per year, which the Trust says equates to 520 trees. The project will reduce energy consumption by 81 percent and result in 74 percent annual carbon dioxide savings, according to Canon.
The Trust plans to consolidate the number of existing printing devices by 84 percent to 233 multi-functional devices which can be accessed by all staff across all sites, helping them to efficiently share patient health records.
BTHFT’s acting head of IT Shaun Bucknill explained: “Healthcare is still a document heavy industry and the new system has not only improved the quality of our documents (which has a direct link to the level of care we’re able to provide), but also led to a more agile and efficient workflow where clinical staff can access their printing from any of the site’s MFDs.
“This ease of access is critical in ensuring that patients are administered the right care quickly and accurately.”
The solution includes an ID card-based authentication process so that documents can only be accessed and collected by the sender, helping to secure confidential documents that include patient data.
The next stage of the three-part implementation will see the solution expanded to the rest of the organisation from eight sites to 80.
