Cisco virtual data centre line-up Switches, servers and software designed for scalable networks Jim Duffy September 29, 2010 Network World US Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Cisco's newest products include switches, servers, software and modules designed specifically for scalable virtual environments. 1. Cisco's Unified Computing System portfolio now includes the B230 M1 blade server, which features Intel's Nehalem EX processors and 32 DIMM slots for support of up to 512GB of application processing memory in a half blade form factor. 2. The Nexus 5548 switch houses 48 10G ports in 1RU. Sixteen of the ports can be configured as lossless Ethernet or Fibre Channel ports to facilitate the migration to a converged Fibre Channel-over-Ethernet fabric. 3. The Nexus 2224TP fabric extender is designed to work with the Nexus 5000 switch and extend that switch fabric to low density server racks. 4. Virtual WAAS is software that runs on the VMware ESX/ESXi hypervisor and Cisco Unified Computing System servers. It is a virtual WAN optimisation appliance designed to support on demand orchestration on a per-application basis using policy-based configuration in the Cisco Nexus 1000V virtual switch. 5. Virtual Security Gateway is firewall software for the Nexus 1000v virtual switch. It essentially serves as a virtual firewall appliance for that switch to secure the virtual data centre and multi-tenant cloud environments.
