Who encouraged you into a career in technology?
My marketing manager boss, who said: “You seem to like this stuff more than anyone else in the company - do you want to get into it a bit more?” She set me on a lifelong path of believing in asking for forgiveness if caught, not permission. I just got on with it and hope I didn't break anything too badly.
What appealed to you about the industry?
What drew me into tech was data and the power data has to inform and automate decisions. Then you need to be able to execute on that. Some basic computer science is necessary but easy to acquire. I was probably five years into a tech career before I realised it was an industry. That isolation was not helpful and is something I actively try to break now. Networking, or just geeking out at hackathons or tech shows, are important ways to see this is an industry as opposed to a job function.
What put/nearly put you off the technology industry?
Whenever I want to an event I was always the only person from outside London! (Way more intimidating than also being the only woman).
What one thing about the industry would you change to encourage more girls into technology?
Macho bullshit. Though that is more a product of the entrepreneurs than tech workers.
