Startup Guard 3.31

Take better control of your Windows startup programs

Startup Guard is an interesting program which aims to give you better control over the software launched on your PC when Windows starts.

This starts simply by displaying a list of these startup programs. If you spot something you don't need then you can click on it, view the standard Windows File Properties dialog, or open a browser window to look for more information.

If you decide you don't need this particular startup program, then you can delete it at a click. And, unusually, this decision is recorded for reference later. So if you wipe something accidentally, then you can restore the original startup setting in just a moment.

And the program will also notify you about new startup programs, after a short delay. So if you're installing some software which adds a startup component, for example, you won't be alerted right away (this is good, as it gives the installation program time to complete). But maybe 5 or 10 minutes later a pop-up warning will appear, you'll be able to view any new startup programs and delete them as before.

Startup Guard has some oddities. Every time it launched on our test PC, for instance, an entirely different setup program fired up, as though Startup Guard were in some way launching some startup programs itself.

And, more notably, its list of startup programs doesn't appear to be correct. It included the command window (cmd.exe) on our test PC, for instance, even though that wasn't a startup program.

Still, Startup Guard does have some plus points, so if you're looking for a way to more easily monitor your system's startup programs then it may be worth a try.

Startup Guard makes it easier to find out more about your Windows startup programs, delete those you don't need, and change your mind about any deletions later, if necessary. It also had some odd bugs on our system, but it's hard to say how widespread these might be - try it and see how you get on.
