John's Background Switcher is a handy tool that will regularly change your desktop wallpaper to something more interesting.

The program accepts images from a huge range of sources. So along with graphics on your own PC, you're able to import pictures from Flickr and Picasa web albums. The ability to work with media RSS feeds means you can connect to sites like DeviantArt and Photobucket. And if that's not enough, support for Bing and Yahoo! image searches will quickly retrieve graphics matching whatever keywords you provide.

You don't have to restrict yourself to just one of these sources, though - John's Background Switcher allows you to define as many as you like. Then decide how often you'd like the background to be changed (anything from weekly to once every thirty seconds) and you could stop there, leaving the program to cycle through the source list retrieving pictures as required.

If you feel like exploring, though, John's Background Switcher has many more advanced features on offer. It's possible to use multiple images at once, for instance, to create montages or mosaics. You can define "no draw" zones, areas of your desktop where the background won't be displayed (useful if you've a few desktop icons that may difficult to view with some images). And there's even the option to draw a calendar on the desktop, with a variety of customisable views.

Version 4.16:

Features and Changes:

12869: Update JBS to use the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5

CHANGED: After over a decade of being built on Microsoft .NET 2.0 JBS has now moved with the times and is now built on .NET 4.5. What does this mean? It means new installs take less time (since Windows 8 and above include .NET 4.5 but had to install an older version when you installed JBS), some long standing bugs JBS had to workaround are no longer problems, it means JBS should be more stable and can have some cool new performance improvements added in the future. On the down side it means JBS no longer supports older versions of Windows than Vista. Bye bye Windows XP, it’s been fun!

12808: Pick up the date from RSS feeds

FEATURE: JBS now attempts to use the publication date as the photo date when handing MediaRSS photo feeds. Basically, if you show photo information you’ll now see the date too for RSS photos if it’s available.

Bug Fixes:

12897: 500px integration is broken due to TLS/SSL changes made to 500px

FIXED: 500px disabled the old, insecure TLS1 encryption protocol which broke JBS integration. This has now been corrected.

12826: Crash when authenticating with Dropbox and your web connection drops out

FIXED: This edge case has now been fixed – but you still need to sort that dodgy network connection out!

12871: The popup notifier window often shows cut off text

FIXED: Now you can see popup errors in all their glory!

12799: The calendar appears tiny on high DPI displays

FIXED: Now the calendar scales correctly with the display DPI and doesn’t require a magnifying glass to see.

John's Background Switcher has so much functionality that it consumes more RAM than we'd like, 22MB or more on our test PC. If that's not an issue, though, give the program a try - you'll find it's one of the most powerful and versatile wallpaper switching tools around.
