CCleaner 5.0 beta

A flat new look for the popular system cleaner

CCleaner 5.0 beta is a first look at Piriform's revamped cleanup tool.

The key phrase here is "first look", because so far all that's changed is the interface. And that isn't really so radically different. There's a toolbar on the left, the same Cleaner/ Registry/ Tools/ Options buttons, everything seems to work just as it always did.

The key difference is the interface has adopted a more modern, "flat" look. The toolbar replaces the old icons with plain white stencils, for instance, while the title bar is now also a stark-looking white, no matter what your system settings happen to be.

There is no new functionality at the moment, although that will apparently change very quickly, with new features due to appear over the next week, and the final version expected to arrive at the end of November.

We successfully installed CCleaner 5.0 over a previous edition, and it appeared to work just as well as before, locating and cleaning up leftover files and Registry keys. Piriform recommends that you don't install it on a production system, though, and that makes sense to us: it's still a beta, and there's a chance the build might cause problems.

CCleaner becomes the latest program to adopt a flat interface. It's still organised in the same way - all the features are were they were before last time - and so this won't be the most interesting of updates for most people, but apparently new functionality is coming soon.
