PC Tools AntiVirus Free v9.1.0.2900

Keep your PC malware-free with this basic but effective antivirus tool

PC Tools AntiVirus Free delivers basic protection against all the latest malware threats, and helps you browse more safely, too.

If you're tired of waiting for other antivirus tools to grind through their scans, then you'll appreciate the speed that's on offer here. Choose a basic Intelli-Scan and PC Tools AntiVirus Free will check only the system areas most likely to be infected, which on our system took only around 50 seconds.

Full scans will take longer, of course, but you can schedule those to run at a time when you're not around.

PC Tools AntiVirus Free also offers some real-time protection, scanning incoming and outgoing emails, programs you launch, and files you access, copy or move, detecting and blocking any malware it uncovers.

And you may optionally choose to install a browser toolbar, Search Defender, which warns you about dangerous websites and so reduces your chance of being infected by malware in the first place. (Search Defender should work with IE and Firefox, though we found it seemed to prevent some legitimate sites loading in Firefox at all - if that happens to you, just remove the add-on to restore normal operations.)

The program does have its limitations, though. Move to something like PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus and you'll gain modules to analyse running programs for suspicious behaviour, protect your browser and network settings, detect rootkits, add additional browsing protection, and more.

While PC Tools Internet Security has all of that, and includes a firewall and spam filter, for the strongest all-round protection.
