G Data TotalCare 2014 is an extremely comprehensive internet security suite.
Effective file scanning detects and removes known malware before it can cause any damage, for instance, while behaviour monitoring protects you from even the very latest threats, and real-time cloud technology keeps false positives to a minimum.
Browsing protection keeps you safe from phishing sites, sources of malware and other online dangers. And G Data's BankGuard technology ensures the security of your online banking and shopping technology.
Elsewhere, a powerful firewall keeps hackers at bay. A spam filter holds back the tide of junk mail, and system tuning options accelerate your PC's performance.
A Parental Controls module allows you to create profiles for each of your kids, deciding which content they can access (or not), as well as limiting the amount of time they can be online, or using your PC.
An integrated backup function automatically runs backups as required, keeping your most valuable files safe from harm.
And because there's more to computing than PCs, the package also offers protection for your Android smartphone or tablet.
New this time is what G Data calls its CloseGap technology, which the company says "provides fast, effective protection against computer malware, based on a balanced combination of reactive and proactive malware detection techniques".
Another addition is the AutostartManager, which helps optimise your startup programs to cut system boot time.
There's also a device control module to control the use of USB devices.
And all this is presented via a totally redesigned interface, making the program much easier to use.
It's not the most radical of updates, but G Data Total Protection 2014 remains an excellent security suite which offers strong all-round protection
