The latest incarnation of Chrome is Google's fastest browser yet, with the program showing major performance improvements over previous versions.

The enhanced JavaScript engine runs scripts anything up to 66% faster, for instance. And the program now supports GPU-accelerated video, where your graphics card is used to render images: Google say this can help to cut CPU usage by as much as 80%.

Usability enhancements include a revamped settings interface, which now has its own search box. If you can't remember where to find a particular setting, just type a related word here - "sync", say - and Chrome will display any matches for you. This is intelligently implemented, so searching for "language" will give you options to tweak your fonts, language, spell-checker and translation settings - it's really very convenient.

Elsewhere, security improvements include a new mechanism to disable outdated plugins by default.

Of course these new features only build on what's already a very likeable browser: clean, fast, secure and with plenty of features. Chrome 10 has proved reliable in our tests, so if you've not tried it for a while (or at all) then it's worth giving the program another look.

Chrome 10 is a significant performance leap forward, especially with regard to scripting, and the new Settings search tool is convenient, too.
