COMODO BackUp Pro v4 (beta)

Comprehensive solution covers both file- and image-based backups

All good things come to an end. With version 3, COMODO Backup positioned itself at the head of the free backup market, with a powerful, user-friendly tool that offered comprehensive backup options without costing a penny.

With version 4, however, COMODO has decided to introduce a “Pro” version of the program, although it has thankfully retained a cut-down “Free” version too. And while there are some annoying features left out of the Free version (you’ll only know they’re off-limits when you attempt to select one, at which point you’ll be invited to upgrade), it still offers enough functionality to make it a genuinely useful tool.

COMODO BackUp is somewhat unique in allowing you to backup entire drives and partitions as well as files and settings. Everything is handled from a reasonably intuitive interface, although it can take some clicking to familiarise yourself with all of the available options, which include files and directories, Registry settings, email, browser and IM settings, and user folder as well as system state.

Scheduled backups are supported, and the program syncs in closely with COMODO’s online backup service, offering another destination for your backups, albeit for the cost of a subscription.

Changes in version 4 are relatively minor, but the big shift is that COMODO BackUp 4 will no longer be completely free. Many advanced features, such as the ability to password-protect archives or quickly back up files using preset profiles, have been removed from the Free version and will be restricted to the Pro release instead. On their own, they’re not enough to completely cripple the program for free users, but it does take away some of the program’s gloss.

COMODO BackUp 4.0 is currently in beta, which means it’s not recommended for casual, everyday use. Instead, stick to COMODO BackUp 3.0, which shares the same functionality

Version 4.0 adds little to an already excellent program, but in cutting back on functionality for free users, COMODO risks scoring an own goal.
