Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is unifying its IT infrastructure to reduce costs and improve patient care.

The organisation, which has more than 14,000 staff, is to consolidate its IT infrastructure onto a single platform, saving costs on IT hardware and simplifying IT management.

The project, to be designed and implemented by Insight Direct, which is also subcontracting to Yorkshire-based IT services provider Esteem Systems, will allow applications to be delivered from a single platform, centralising the IT administration.

The trust said this approach will make patient and clinical data more readily available to clinicians from multiple locations across Leeds Teaching Hospitals and at other trusts, removing the traditional information barriers when patients need to be treated elsewhere.

The trust has an existing dispersed infrastructure which is unable to authenticate critical clinical applications, meaning sharing patient data between different departments is problematic. Being able to deliver these applications through the new infrastructure will save time and money for each of the individual departments in the trust.

Eileen Jessop, deputy director of informatics at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, said: “Reducing the requirement for hardware in the new unified infrastructure and simplifying the management of the technology will lead to a significant cost saving for us.”

The technologies to be implemented for the trust are Microsoft Active Directory and System Centre Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2012, which will centralise the trust’s IT infrastructure and provide an integrated approach to managing and delivering applications via a single platform.

In other NHS patient data access news, Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust has completed the rollout of a clinical patient data portal and hailed its success.

The portal allows clinicians to view vital patient information stored on a variety of systems through a single view.
