There has been a significant increase in the demand for IT staff, according to an extensive survey of recruitment firms.
Following a year of falling demand, the job market hit a plateau in November. Figures for last month now show a growth in temporary and permanent jobs on offer, albeit from a low base.
Job availability in the IT sector grew more than any other area with regards to permanent work, and was beaten only by secretarial work in temporary opportunities.
The survey uses a figure to represent demand, where anything above 50 indicates growth on the previous month. Data is featured in the Recruitment Industry Survey, which is produced by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and consultancy KPMG.
For permanent IT jobs, the figure in December was 65.7, indicating a decent rise in availability. This compared favourably against a heavy fall 12 months before, of 32.8, as the recession hit deeply.
Temporary staff positions also grew during the month, producing a figure of 58.5. This compared to a fall at 35.1 a year earlier.
All industry sectors experienced some growth, except for permanent blue collar staff and temporary hotel and catering staff.
Kevin Green, chief executive at the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, said: “As we head into 2010, the recovery of the UK jobs market is accelerating. Employer confidence is increasing and vacancies are on the up – with the fastest growth in permanent jobs since July 2007.”
But the job market would remain “extremely competitive”, he said, in particular for younger staff.
A British Computer Society survey published yesterday showed that many UK businesses are paying particular attention to creating a “map” of the IT skills they possess, as they prepare for what they anticipate could be a tough year.
