Facebook has revealed that women make up just 31 percent of its workforce.
The social network’s COO Sheryl Sandberg has been vocal about increasing women workers in the tech industry. She published her book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead last year.
However Sandberg’s own company has disclosed dismal figures in terms of gender diversity. Only 15 percent of the technology departments and 23 percent of senior managers are female. The company employs 6,818 people.
Facebook’s ethnicity make-up also leaves little to be desired.
While over two-thirds of senior managers at the social network are white, only two percent are black. Further, only two percent of employees across the entire company are black. Thirty-four percent of workers are Asian, two percent Hispanic and three percent class themselves as being from two or more ethnic groups.
Facebook said: “Diversity is something that we’re treating as everyone’s responsibility at Facebook, and the challenge of finding qualified but underrepresented candidates is one that we’re addressing as part of a strategic effort across Facebook. Since our strategic diversity team launched last year, we’re already seeing improved new hire figures and lower attrition rates for underrepresented groups.”
But the figures are representative of the entire technology industry as a whole. Google recently disclosed its employee figures, and similar to Facebook, 70 percent of Google's employees are men. Further, 61 percent of its employees are white, 30 percent are Asian, three percent are Hispanic and two percent are black.
In the UK, a recent study by sector skills council e-skills UK and BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, found that the percentage of women working in IT is declining, falling from 17 percent in 2012 to 16 percent last year.
