Energy giant E.ON is cutting 75 IT jobs from a total of 800 following a 90-day consultation period with staff and unions over the closure of a call centre in Essex.

The closure of the Rayleigh call centre was first announced in January. The site will shut on 25 June after consultations with unions including Unite, Unison and Prospect.

The 75 to go are in-house IT support staff based at Rayleigh, at E.ON’s Coventry headquarters and its office in Kingswinford, West Midlands. The energy company said that the move was part of its ongoing internal review of the business’ performance and efficiency.

E.ON said: “The decision to close the Rayleigh site was not a move that we’ve taken lightly.”

Phil Green, Unison union’s regional organiser, told the BBC that it had appealed the closure, suggesting the call centre remain open on a smaller scale, but that the company was determined to close the site.

“We are asking our lawyers to look at whether E.ON has properly consulted with a view to avoiding these redundancies,” Green said to the BBC.

Although E.ON said in January that it was considering redeployment of staff, Unison said that only between 20 to 40 people would be able to relocate.

The company currently employs more than 16,000 people across its UK operations.

In February, E.ON signed a contract with e-Spirit to standardise content management for its 120 internet and intranet sites.
