IT staff at Alliance Boots are among those at risk after the company announced it was cutting 900 back office jobs.
The high street pharmacy chain said the cuts would all take place at its head office in Nottingham, hitting IT and other infrastructure and support roles in its Health & Beauty division. At this stage there are no plans to offshore any roles.
Boots aims to cut £57 million from annual costs. Three years ago, the company was bought by private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts for £11 billion.
In spite of the IT cuts being made, systems will be at the heart of the company’s planned transformation. In a statement, Boots said the programme focuses on “optimising end-to-end business processes”, including moving to “a leaner central support organisation, supported by new systems” and optimised supply chain and manufacturing.
The cuts represent around 10 percent of the company’s support staff, Boots said.
Alex Gourlay, chief executive of the Health & Beauty division at Boots, insisted that the changes were geared at giving the company “a stronger and more agile support infrastructure”.
